Product Introduction
A common rail injector can be hydraulically correct and still perform poorly if its electrical path is degraded. The Bosch 4-Pin Common Rail Diesel Injector Connector carries short current pulses from the ECU to the injector solenoid. These pulses can be under 200 microseconds. Any added resistance, voltage sag, or terminal fretting changes needle opening time, pilot quantity, and cylinder balance. This guide focuses on the connector as part of the diesel common rail control loop: pin function, electrical limits, environmental data, failure modes, voltage-drop testing, and fitment across Bosch CRI and CRIN injector families.
⚡ The Connector Is Part of the Current Waveform
Injector current is not a simple on-off signal. The ECU applies a peak pull-in current, then switches to a lower PWM holding current. If connector resistance rises, the current rise slows. The needle opens later. Pilot injection quantity drops, and the ECU compensates by extending injection duration. That compensation can hide the fault until fuel consumption rises, idle becomes uneven, or a driver fault code appears. A contact resistance of only 50–100 mΩ can distort the waveform, even when a static resistance check looks acceptable.
🔌 4-Pin Configuration: 2 Power + 2 Sense/Pilot
The 4-pin layout uses two power pins for the solenoid and two sense or pilot pins for current measurement and driver feedback on supported ECU strategies. Pin pitch on the mating side is 4.0 mm. The connector is used across Bosch CRI1, CRI2, CRI3, and CRIN2 injector families, plus equivalent Delphi and Denso injectors that share the same pin-out. Applications include BMW M57 and N57, Mercedes OM642, VW and Audi TDI, Ford Transit 2.2 and 2.4, Iveco Daily, Fiat Ducato, and heavy-duty MAN, Scania, DAF, and Volvo common rail systems.
🧪 Voltage-Drop Test: The Fastest Connector Diagnosis
Do not rely only on resistance. Measure voltage at the injector connector during cranking and pull-in. A healthy circuit should show near battery voltage, typically around 12 V during the pull-in phase. A degraded connector may show a sag of 1–2 V. That sag prolongs injection duration and can raise fuel consumption by 3–5%. Wiggle the harness while measuring. If the reading changes, the terminal or crimp is intermittent. This test separates connector faults from solenoid faults before an injector is replaced.
